People increasingly get answers straight from AI: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and others. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your content and brand easier for these systems to find, understand, trust and cite. This guide explains what GEO is, what we know and do not know, and a practical checklist you can use today.
What Is GEO?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. Where traditional SEO aims to rank pages in a list of results, GEO aims to have your brand mentioned, recommended or cited inside AI-generated answers.
The good news: GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Many AI answer systems retrieve information from the web or from search indexes, so pages that are crawlable, clear and credible are in a better position. Read GEO vs SEO: Getting Cited by AI for the differences.
How AI Answers Pick Sources
In general terms, many AI search experiences seem to work roughly like this:
- Interpret the question. The system works out what is being asked and may break it into sub-questions.
- Retrieve. It searches the web or an index for relevant pages.
- Select. It favors sources that appear relevant, clear and trustworthy.
- Synthesize. It writes an answer, sometimes with citations or links.
Separately, what a model “knows” about your brand may also reflect how your brand is described across the web. That is why consistent, widespread, accurate mentions matter.
The Pillars of GEO
Be Findable
Crawlable, indexable pages with solid technical SEO. Check your robots rules to be sure you are not unintentionally blocking the crawlers you want.
Be Clear
Answer-first writing, descriptive headings and self-contained sections that are easy to quote.
Be Credible
Real authors, expertise, sources, reviews and a consistent brand identity (E-E-A-T).
Be Referenced
Mentions, reviews, citations and links on reputable third-party sites.
Entity and Brand Building
An entity is a clearly defined “thing”, such as your business, your founder or your product. The clearer and more consistent your entity information is, the easier it is for search engines and AI systems to understand who you are.
- Use the same name, description and key facts everywhere
- Create a detailed About page with founders, history and expertise
- Keep social and directory profiles complete and consistent
- Link your site and profiles together (for example, with sameAs in schema)
- Get listed in relevant industry directories and associations
- Build author pages for everyone who writes for the site
Structured Data
Structured data (schema markup) describes your content in a machine-readable way. It helps search engines understand pages and can make you eligible for rich results. Whether and how AI systems use it directly is not fully public, but it helps clarity and costs little. Always make sure schema matches visible content.
- Organization or LocalBusiness on your homepage or about page
- Article with author details on posts
- Product, Service, FAQ or HowTo where genuinely appropriate
- Build it with the Schema Generator, reference schema.org
Answer-First Formatting
Make it easy to lift a clear, accurate answer from your page.
- Start with a direct 2 to 3 sentence answer to the main question
- Use headings phrased like real questions
- Keep each section focused and understandable on its own
- Use lists, steps and tables for processes and comparisons
- Define terms plainly
- Include dates and update content when facts change
Review this page for AI-answer readiness: [paste content]. 1) Does the intro answer the main question directly? Rewrite it if not. 2) List the questions this page answers and any it should answer but does not. 3) Identify vague claims that need evidence. 4) Suggest headings phrased as questions. Do not add facts I have not provided.
Original Data and Insight
AI answers often summarize what many sources say. Being the source of something new gives others, and AI systems, a reason to reference you.
Surveys
Ask your audience or customers a few focused questions and publish the results with methodology.
Experiments
Test something and document what happened, including what did not work.
Frameworks
Name and explain a clear process you use. Memorable frameworks get referenced.
Free Tools
Calculators and checkers people link to and mention.
Reviews and Mentions Across the Web
- Encourage genuine reviews on platforms relevant to your industry
- Earn mentions in industry publications, podcasts and newsletters
- Participate helpfully in communities where your audience asks questions (following each community’s rules)
- Get included in reputable “best of” lists on merit
- Pursue digital PR with genuinely newsworthy angles

Measuring AI Visibility
Measurement is still immature, so combine a few simple methods.
- Manual prompt tracking. Keep a list of 20 to 50 prompts your customers might ask. Each month, run them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google, and record whether you are mentioned or cited. Answers vary between runs, so look for trends rather than single results.
- Referral traffic in GA4. Look at traffic sources for referrals from AI platforms (for example, domains associated with ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot). Consider a custom channel group to track them together.
- Search Console. Monitor impressions and clicks; Google includes AI features traffic within its overall Search reporting.
- Brand signals. Watch branded search volume and direct traffic over time.
- Ask new leads. Add “How did you hear about us?” to forms, with an AI assistant option.

- Earn mentions. Digital PR, reviews and partnerships.
- Track. Monthly prompt tracking plus AI referral traffic.
A Note on llms.txt
llms.txt is a proposed convention for a file that gives AI systems a curated guide to a site. Adoption by major AI platforms is unclear, so treat it as optional and low-priority compared with the fundamentals above.
