An SEO agency is the classic way to turn search skills into a business. You help businesses get found, and they pay you for audits, projects and ongoing work. You can start alone, from a laptop, and grow into a team. This track shows you how to package your services, find the right clients, deliver consistently and launch in 30 days.
What an SEO Agency Actually Sells
Clients do not really buy “SEO”. They buy more calls, more leads, more sales and more visibility. Your services are the path to those outcomes. Build a clear services menu so prospects can see exactly what you do.

Choosing Your Ideal Clients
The best early clients are businesses where search directly drives revenue and where you can understand their customers quickly.
- Customers actively search for what they sell (plumbers, dentists, lawyers, software, ecommerce)
- A single new customer is valuable to them
- They have an existing website you can improve
- They can afford a steady monthly investment
- They are responsive and willing to implement changes
- You find their industry interesting enough to study
Create an ideal client profile for an SEO agency serving [niche]. Include: business size, typical decision maker, their top 5 marketing frustrations, where they spend time online, objections they may have to hiring an SEO agency, and 3 messages that would resonate with them. Keep it realistic and avoid stereotypes.
The Offer Ladder: Audit, Project, Retainer
An offer ladder lets clients start small, trust you, and step up. It also makes selling easier, because the first “yes” is small.
- Audit (entry). A fixed-scope review with clear findings and priorities. Low risk for the client, and it shows how you think.
- Project (middle). Implement the top fixes: a technical cleanup, a local SEO setup, or a set of optimized service pages. Clear deliverables, clear end date.
- Retainer (ongoing). Monthly work on content, links, technical upkeep, GEO and reporting. This is where long-term results and a stable business come from.
Pricing varies widely by market, scope and experience. Use the Pricing Calculator to work out your costs and hours, and read the SEO Pricing and Packages Guide.

Running a Discovery Call
A good discovery call is mostly listening. Your goal is to understand the business well enough to recommend the right first step, or to say honestly that you are not the right fit.
- Goals. What would a great year look like? Which services or products matter most?
- Customers. Who buys, how do they find the business today, and what do they search for?
- History. What SEO or marketing have they tried, and what happened?
- Resources. Who can approve changes, write content or provide expertise?
- Budget and timing. What range feels comfortable, and when do they want to start?
- Next step. Recommend an audit or a small project, and agree when you will send the proposal.
Here are my discovery call notes for [business]: [paste notes]. Summarize their goals and constraints, recommend the best first offer (audit, project or retainer) with reasons, list 3 risks or open questions, and draft a short follow-up email confirming next steps. No guarantees about rankings or traffic.
Keeping Clients Happy
Most clients leave because of silence and confusion, not just results. Build habits that keep trust high.
- Set expectations early: SEO takes time and results are never guaranteed
- Send a short update every week or two, even when there is little news
- Report business outcomes (leads, calls, sales), not just rankings
- Explain every recommendation in plain English
- Admit mistakes quickly and fix them
- Ask for feedback each quarter and act on it
