Video is where a lot of people learn, compare and decide. YouTube is one of the biggest search engines in the world, Shorts and Reels deliver reach, and video results show up across Google. The good news: video SEO follows the same logic as web SEO โ understand the search, answer it better, and make it easy for platforms to understand you.
Keyword research for video
Not every keyword deserves a video. Look for searches where people want to see something: tutorials, walkthroughs, reviews, comparisons and demos.
- Start with YouTube autocomplete. Type your topic and note suggestions. Try adding “how to”, “vs”, “for beginners”, “review”.
- Check Google for video results. If a search shows videos on page one, it’s a strong video keyword.
- Mine comments. Questions under popular videos in your niche are content ideas.
- Use your site data. Search Console queries with “how to” intent are great video candidates.
- Group ideas into series. A playlist of related videos helps viewers binge and helps YouTube understand your topic.
Brainstorm faster with the Keyword Idea Box.
Titles, thumbnails, descriptions and chapters
Titles
Include the core keyword naturally, lead with the benefit, and keep it readable. Test yours with the Headline Analyzer.
Thumbnails
One clear idea: a face or object, high contrast, a few big words at most. It should complement the title, not repeat it.
Descriptions
First two lines summarize the video with the keyword. Then add links, resources and a brief outline.
Chapters
Add timestamps in the description (starting at 0:00). Chapters help viewers navigate and can appear in search results.
I'm making a YouTube video on "[topic]" for [audience]. Target keyword: "[keyword]". Give me: 1. 5 title options under 60 characters 2. 3 thumbnail concepts (visual + max 4 words of text) 3. A description: 2-line summary with the keyword, then a bullet outline 4. Suggested chapter names based on this script outline: [paste outline]
Transcripts and captions
Accurate captions make videos accessible and give platforms more text to understand your topic. Auto-captions are a starting point, not the finish line.
- Review and correct auto-generated captions, especially brand names and technical terms.
- Export the transcript and turn it into a blog post or a detailed show-notes page.
- Include a cleaned-up transcript (or summary) on the page where you embed the video.
- Say your keyword naturally in the first 30 seconds of the video.
Embedding video on your site
Embedding helps your site pages as well as your channel. Give each important video a dedicated page or place it on the most relevant article.
- Put the video near the top of a page where it’s the main content or a key supporting element.
- Add context: a written summary, key takeaways, and transcript or detailed notes.
- Add VideoObject structured data with name, description, thumbnail URL, upload date and duration. Many SEO plugins do this; you can also build it with the Schema Generator. Check with Google’s Rich Results Test.
- Include videos in a video sitemap or ensure your SEO plugin exposes them.
- Lazy-load embeds so they don’t slow your pages down.
Shorts, Reels and TikTok
Short-form video is for reach and discovery. Use it to test ideas, then turn the winners into long-form videos and articles.
- Hook in the first second or two โ state the problem or the payoff.
- One idea per clip.
- Use on-screen text with the keyword (see Social Media SEO).
- Point to the long-form video or a lead magnet where the platform allows.
AI video tools

Faceless video options
Not comfortable on camera? Plenty of useful channels never show a face.
Screen tutorials
Record your screen while you walk through a tool or process. Ideal for SEO topics.
Slides + voiceover
Turn a pillar article into a narrated slide deck.
Hands-only / b-roll
Show your desk, notebook, or product with a voiceover.
AI voice or avatar
Possible, but disclose where required and make sure the content itself is original and valuable.
A simple video production workflow
- Outline, don’t script everything. A tight outline with a scripted hook and ending keeps delivery natural.
- Record in batches. Film two to four videos in one session to save setup time.
- Edit for pace. Cut pauses and repetition; Descript’s transcript editing makes this fast.
- Add captions and chapters. Review auto-captions before publishing.
- Design the thumbnail from a template in Canva.
- Publish and embed on the matching site page the same day.
- Cut clips for Shorts, Reels and TikTok.
- Review analytics after a few weeks: click-through rate and viewer retention tell you whether to fix the packaging or the content.
Reading YouTube analytics
| Signal | What it suggests | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Low impressions | Topic has little demand or weak relevance signals | Revisit keyword choice, title and description |
| Impressions but low click-through | Packaging isn’t compelling | Test a new thumbnail or title |
| Early drop-off | Hook doesn’t match the promise | Get to the point faster in the next video |
| Good retention, few subscribers | Viewers like the video but don’t see a reason to return | Mention the series or next video; build playlists |
